The following cases are allowed to use international driver’s license IAA which is issued by US

(INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION . INC ).

* Visa issued by Vietnam is short-term (less than 3 months).

* Absolutely have a national driver’s license and international driver’s license. This

driver’s license is valid.

For example: An American having a U.S driver’s license – valid – enclosed with international

driver’s license are allowed to drive.

*Driving under the class of the original national driver's license

For example: One French, French driver's license only has car class. When using international

driver's license, it is allowed to drive with car class in Vietnam (less than 9 seats).

The following cases are not allowed to use international driver’s license IAA which is issued by

US (INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION . INC ).

* When using Visa during 5 years (marriage visa - Visa Exemption) or long-term residence

card are not allowed to use international driver's license in Vietnam.

When driving in Vietnam, it is mandatory to transfer to Vietnamese driver's license issued by

Vietnam Ministry of Transport.

* No international driver’s license enclosed (besides international driver’s license IAA, it is

obligatory to have national driver’s license enclosed).

For example: Chinese people does not have Chinese driver’s license, it is not allowed to use

international driver’s license IAA in Vietnam.

* The national driver’s license is expired.

For example: If having expired U.S driver’s license, an American is not allowed to international

driver’s license IAA in Vietnam although international driver’s license is valid.

According to the law, U.A driver’s license is valid.

* The national driver’s license has only car class - international driver’s license IAA has both car

class and motorcycle class – it is not allowed to drive in Vietnam with this international driver’s

license !

For example: A singaporean: Singaporean driver’s license does not motorcycle class – although

international driver’s license has motorcycle class: it is not allowed to drive in Vietnam with

international driver’s license.

When driver’s license issued by Vietnam Ministry of Transport has motorcycle class, it is

allowed to drive motorcycle in Vietnam.

* Vietnamese people or people having 02 citizenships are not allowed to use international

driver’s license IAA in Vietnam.

For example: Vietnamese having U.S driver’s license, it is obligatory to transfer to Vietnamese

driver’s license. It is not allowed to use international driver’s license IAA (international driver’s

license IAA is used in Vietnam for Foreigners).
